Build a Miniature Motorized Port with Cranes & Ships! 🏗️⚓

Ever wondered how giant cranes lift heavy containers onto ships at a busy harbor? In this fun build, you'll create your very own tiny port — complete with a motorized crane that swings and lifts, and a little ship that floats and zooms across the water!

🌊 What Are We Building?

Ports are amazing places where giant ships dock and cranes lift huge containers full of toys, food, and supplies from all over the world! In this project, you'll build a miniature working model of a port using a motorized crane (powered by two servo motors) and a small ship that can move across a "sea" using a tiny DC motor. It's a perfect way to learn about motors, gears, buoyancy, and basic coding — all while making something you can show off to your friends and family.

Why kids love this project: You get to combine art (decorating the harbor), engineering (building the crane), and code (making things move) — all in one model!

🧰 What You'll Need

🔌 Arduino Uno
⚙️ SG90 Micro Servo Motors x2
🌀 Small DC Motor + Propeller
📦 Cardboard / Foam Board
🟦 Blue Craft Paper (Sea)
🥢 Wooden Skewers
🔫 Hot Glue Gun
💡 LEDs x3
🪵 Foam Block (Ship Hull)
🧵 Breadboard + Jumper Wires
🔋 9V Battery + Holder
🧲 Small Transistor (for motor)
Ask an adult to help with: hot glue gun use, soldering (if any), and cutting cardboard with sharp tools.

🛠️ Step-by-Step Build Instructions

1

Plan the Port Layout

On a large piece of cardboard (about 40cm x 30cm), sketch where your dock, crane tower, and "sea" channel will go. Leave space on one side for the ship to glide back and forth.

2

Build the Base and Dock

Cut your cardboard base to size. Cut a separate rectangular piece for the raised dock platform and glue it down. Paint or cover the "sea" area with blue craft paper to look like water.

3

Construct the Crane Tower

Glue wooden skewers into an "A-frame" tower shape. Mount your first servo motor (the base/rotation servo) at the top of the tower's base so it can spin the whole arm left and right, just like a real crane!

4

Add the Lifting Arm

Attach a long skewer as the crane's horizontal arm on top of the rotating base. Fix the second servo near the tip of the arm to control a thread-and-hook mechanism that raises and lowers cargo.

5

Build the Ship and Motor Mount

Carve or cut a foam block into a simple boat-hull shape. Attach a small DC motor with a propeller at the back, sealed so water won't reach the wiring. This will push your ship across the sea channel.

6

Wire the Electronics

Connect both servos directly to the Arduino's signal pins and power rails. Wire the DC motor through a transistor (so the Arduino can safely control it) and add LEDs for harbor lights. See the wiring table below!

7

Upload the Code

Plug your Arduino into the computer, open the Arduino IDE, paste in the code below, and click Upload. Your crane should rotate, lift, and lower — and your ship should chug across the water!

8

Test and Decorate

Test all the movements first. Then go wild decorating: add tiny cardboard shipping containers, hand-drawn signs, miniature people, and little harbor lights for a glowing night-time port!
